The Ghana Association of teachers (GNAT), Kumasi metro has organized a free health screening exercise for it’s members to ensure they go about their daily activities in good health.
The exercise, GNAT mobile clinic was initiated in 2015 by the association and it is done annually to help all members in the Kumasi metropolis know their health status and seek treatment.
This year’s version started in January and has been done in schools such as the Alzariya Islamic SHS, Islamic SHS, St. Hubert Seminary, sakafia Islamic SHS and now at the Oforikrom M/A cluster of schools.
The teachers were screened for blood pressure, hepathitis, body mass index, diabetes etc. and were also given advise on treatment according to their test results.
Chairman for the Kumasi Metro GNAT, Mr. Victor De-graft Ettison told otecfmghana that many young and energetic teachers were dying from curable and preventable diseases such as hepatitis, diabetes and high blood pressure mostly because they could not make time to go for medical check ups hence the introduction of the GNAT mobile clinic.
According to him, some teachers reportedly collapse in front of their students whiles teaching, a situation which has been arrested through the introduction of the health screening program.
