Recent reports reveal that Former President John Agyekum Kufuor received land from the immediate past Mahama-led administration. Kufuor, just like his counterpart, Jerry John Rawlings was given a land allocation as part of his retirement benefits by the government.
The disclosure was made by the former president’s spokesperson, Frank Agyekum while speaking on Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday.
According to Frank Agyekum, the land Kufuor received is where the government is supposed to build a residential home for him as was recommended by by the committee set to review his retirement benefits. He explained that since after Kufuor left office as a president the land has been lying in wait because the residential home has not been built as the former president is currently living in his own house at East Cantonments.
As it will be recalled as part of his retirement benefit that said that he should be given a residential accommodation, that has not been done yet and what the government decided to do was to allocate him a plot of land on which the house could be built. That is what has happened, Frank Agyekum explained.
He is currently in his own house at East Cantonments, he added.
Former Minister of Lands, Nii Osa Mills had earlier claimed that the past administration gave out lands to the former presidents. Osa Mills made the claim on Eyewitness News on Tuesday following media reports that the Mahama-led administration gave former President Jerry John Rawlings 4.368 acres of land at Ridge in Accra at a lease of GHc10 per annum for 99 years for his humanitarian project. The reports were backed by series of letters exchanged between the Lands Commission and Former President Rawlings.
Nevertheless, all these are perceived to be coming in the bid to find explanations for the immediate past president, John Mahama’s request to keep his official residence as his retirement home; a move that earned him such a massive backlash that forced him into withdrawing the request.
