Minister of Education Mathew Opoku Prempeh is calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP David Asante -Apeatu to sack the Ashanti regional public relations officer of the police command ASP Yusif Tanko and the SWAT commander Supt Christopher Klormegah.
His calls comes on the back of students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) who were severally assaulted by the police on Tuesday.
Police say the students went on rampage after winning Inter Schools and Colleges competition (Interco) and vandalised police patrol cars, blocked roads and pelted stones at police.
The students accused the police of firing live bullets and tear gas.
But speaking on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkra, the Minster accused Supt Klormegah and ASP Tanko of telling lies about the brutalities calling on the IGP to transfer the two from the region.
According to him, the two have been peddling falsehood that police men on duty did not fire guns as speculated by the aggrieved students.
The minister of Education warned that he will stage a demonstration for the dismissal of the two if the IGP refuses to sanction them.
He cited that the KTI incident adds up to two cases where Supt Klormegah had supervised police brutalities describing him as a ‘disgrace’ to the police service.
Dr Opoku Prempeh questioned why police rushed to KTI dormitories to beat up teachers and students who didn’t even go to the stadium.
‘He should have told us the truth so that a warning or an advise would have been given, but he lied about the incident, how can such a person continue to wear police uniform, but I am not surprised, Klormega is the same person who brutalised students in Kenyase. ASP Tanko too just goes about peddling falsehood.
No civilian has reported to the police that his/her car was smashed by the students, the police in Asokwa are even surprised that he and other police went to the dormitories of KTI when he wasn’t in charge. I am not saying that when children go wayward, they shouldn’t be punished, but it should be done the right way. I will write a letter to the IGP to sack ASP Tanko and Supt Klormega,’he fumed.
According to him, government didn’t supply them uniforms to cause mayhem in the region saying some of the students had to break walls to run from angry police.
According to him, the SWAT commander has the tendency of killing people if members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) go on demonstration.
‘He will kill people and government will be blamed, they should be sacked, he can be compared to somebody who dupes people in Kejetia,’ a livid Minister said.
