A fact-finding committee has been set-up by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to find out the death of James Bawa, a student from the Agona Senior High Technical School, whose untimely death happened on the Mamponteng-Aboaso road.
An eye witness account indicate that the 19-year-old first year student was sitting at the window of the hired Urvan car with about half of his body outside, with his hands raised up in the air while joining his colleagues in the chorus of some cheering songs, popularly known as ‘Jama.’
However, while their car sped past a vehicle ahead of them in a bid to overtake, they came across another speeding tipper truck which came with such strong wind that James Bawa’s hands were chopped off by a metal on the truck.
That was not all as the rest of his body fell off the Urvan and unto the street while another speeding taxi run over him, dragging him for a while and mutilating his body beyond recognition.
So bizarre was the accident that a shovel had to be used in fetching the mortal remains of the 19-year-old into a container for internment the next day.
As commentaries went on about the bizarre occurrence, Today sought from the school as to why an Urvan bus would be used to carry students on a journey and without any supervision from a teacher of the school.
An administrative staff who offered to speak but pleaded anonymity told this reporter that ‘the students are very stubborn and usually do what please them.’
The source continued that the school had hired two buses to convey the students from Agona to the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi for the Inter-schools and Colleges Competition.
“One of the buses was a Metro Mass bus we hired and the other one was from Komfo Anokye Senior High School. All these were available but these boys refused and decided to do things their own way,” the source disclosed.
The source told Today the in recent times some teachers of the school have had a tough time with some of the students who have proved very difficult to control and was not surprised they refused to use any of the two buses hired by the school, ‘because there will be teachers sitting in those buses and they can’t fool as they want.’
Even though the death and circumstances leading to it were very difficult to hold back tears, the source said it was supposed to be a painful lesson to the students who know very little but would always challenge authority even when they are set on a collision course.
