‘Krobos for Change,’ a group made up of Krobos residing in the Western Region, has vented its spleen on members of the minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
According to the Krobos, the minority have subjected two of their (Krobos’) blood relations – Boakye Agyarko, Minister of Energy and the Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba – to public ridicule.
Some minority members in parliament accused Mr Boakye Agyarko of attempting to bribe them, ostensibly to have his nomination approved – after he had gone through the vetting process.
The allegation came hours after the minority had refused to support the approval of Mr Boakye Agyarko and Osafo Maafo (then Senior Minister-designate) after raising concerns over some statements he (Agyarko) made before the committee.
The nomination of Otiko Afisa Djaba as Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection by President Akufo-Addo was also rejected by the minority NDC because of her alleged posturing before the committee and her response to some questions that were leveled against her during the vetting.
Members of Krobo for Change have asserted that the move by the minority was a calculated attempt to intimidate the two natives of Krobo and subject them to public opprobrium.
“Per the action of these detractors, an impression has been created as if Krobo people were corrupt and disrespectful,” the group indicated.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Nene Okrah, chairman of Krobos for Change, noted that the people of Krobo had always lived above reproach, whereever they found themselves.
“We know Boakye Agyarko very well; he is not corrupt. So how on earth can someone say the Energy Minister had to bribe his way to become a minister? All Ghanaians saw his performance and delivery during his vetting,” he wondered.
He pointed out that the detractors of Madam Otiko Djaba had decided to make her a cynosure of attraction for all the bad reasons.
“We find it quite disturbing that long after going through that harrowing experience in the hands of the NDC during her vetting, the detractors have decided to go a step further by taking legal action against her for not doing national service,” he stated.
He asserted that the action against the Gender Minister might go a long way to discourage young Krobo ladies from venturing into politics of this country in the future.
