The Brong Ahafo Regional minister Mr. Kwaku Asomah- Cheremeh has expressed great sadness over the tragedy that occurred at the Kintampo Waterfalls on the 19th of March.
Eighteen students, fifteen from Wenchi Methodist senior high school and three from the University of Energy and Natural Resources have been confirmed dead with thirty others injured.
The students who were reported to have been swimming under the fall lost their lives when a tree broke and fell on them after a rainstorm hit the area.
Speaking to Akwasi Boateng the host of Maakye on Accra-based Hot93.9 FM, Mr. Asomah- Cheremeh stated that the whole of Brong Ahafo is bereaved with the great tragedy that has befallen them and as such he is on his way to Kintampo to see the extent of the damage.
“The whole of Brong Ahafo is bereaved to know that eighteen students have lost their lives, fifteen from Wenchi senior high school and three from the University of Energy and Natural Resources. It is painful and as such I am on my way to Kintampo to see how things are and from there I will go to the mortuary and then to the hospital to visit the injured.”
“Ever since the falls was discovered, something like this has never happened before which makes it very painful” he added.
However, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Madam Catherine Abelema Afeku has also expressed her deepest condolences to the bereaved families:
“It is really painful for your child to go to on an excursion only to hear that a tragedy like this has happened to them. It is a great loss to the family and the country as a whole and that is why we are going there to sympathize with them and also to visit the falls to view the current situation over there.”She told Akwasi Boateng on Hot 93.9fm
She also advised the media and the public to be circumspect in their reportage especially sharing of images of the dead and the injured out of respect to their families.
