The highly anticipated sentencing of Nayele Ametefe, aka Ruby Adu-Gyamfi took place at the Uxbridge crown court today with an unexpected twist.
Many legal luminaries who have followed the case have predicted a minimum of 15yrs jail term for the perennial offender who had spent time in Holland for a similar offense.
To the chagrin of many, the presiding judge handed down 8yrs and 8months to Miss Nayele for trafficking 12kgs of 78% pure cocaine to the UK. He also offered the possibility for commutation of the term to 4yrs and 4months for good behavior upon incarceration.
Information gathered indicates that the unprecedented less jail term could not have been possible without the machinations of some very powerful personalities within the Ghanaian ruling elites, as alluded to by Mr. James Kobby, the lawyer for Miss Nayele Ametafe.
In the wake of this scandal, two names that made rounds in the news media in association with the accused was John Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim. We also remember that on the day of Nayele’s arrest at the Heathrow International Airport, there was an official vehicle from the Ghanaian Embassy to pick her up. Not only that, but also the Ghanaian Ambassador to the UK,
Mr. Victor Smith upon being alerted of her arrest visited Miss Nayele in Jail the next day and provided her a council. One surprising observation at the sentencing today was the presence of a
Ghanaian minister of state in a company of two other men in the court room. It was therefore no coincidence that Mr. Kobby trumped Nayele’s companionship with the ruling elites as a basis for seeking lesser jail term.
