Celebrated Ghanaian boxer, Azumah Nelson, has dismissed assertions that he is aiming to become the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) following his resurgence in the boxing circles in recent times.
Azumah has been considered to contest the incumbent President, Mr. Peter Zwennes, when the federation returns to congress later this year haven’t played a major role in the development of the sport in the country.
Remarking on the sidelines during the launch of the third edition of his “Azumah Nelson Fight Night” series slated for Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Bukom Boxing Arena, the “Boxing Professor” dismissed those assertions.
The “Zoom Zoom” stated that his aim at the moment is to be involved directly in the grooming and development of talents for growth of boxing so as to bring more world champions for Ghana in the near future.
He said the country currently cannot boast of any world champion after the likes of himself, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey and Joseph Agbeko left the scene thus the need to use his experience and expertise to nurture and develop the next generation world champions.
He added that “being GBA president does not guarantee world champions, but I will like rather to play a direct role like being the technical director, so as to polish them for the bigger stage.”
Azumah explained that organisers of the ‘Azumah Nelson Fight Night’ did not put up the bouts to make money but rather to provide a prestigious platform for boxers to showcase their talents in a bid to give them foreign exposure.
The headline match of the Azumah Nelson Fight Night features national Super Featherweight Champion, Joshua Wahab Oluwaseum, who will make the fourth defence of his belt against former champion, Abraham Osei Bonsu.
Karamudeen Boyefio will be hopeful of capitalising on the golden opportunity to claim the National Super Bantamweight strap when he faces fellow contender, Isaac Sackey, while Emmanuel Martey and Stephen Abbey will battle for the National Super Middleweight title.
Michael Pappoe will also face Isaac Dowuona for the Super Featherweight title.
In the international contests, Uganda’s Selemani Saidi will battle Obodai Sai while baby-faced Lebanese brawler, Elias Farah, will engage Musa Rahman Lawson in a spicy international middleweight encounter.
