Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah, has doubted Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. After picking up just one point from their opening two matches in Group E, Ghana’s Black Stars are indeed in danger of missing out on the Russian World Cup.

The Black Stars could only manage a goalless draw with Uganda last month in Tamale, in the opening group game. The team fell to Egypt for the second time in three years, leaving them five points behind Egypt in third place. The Pharaohs on Sunday, handed the Black Stars 2-0 defeat in Alexandria.
Considering the heartbreaking lapses on Ghana’s side, the former Ghana captain believes the Pharaohs are now favourites to qualify from Group E to the 2018 World Cup. Speaking to Citi Fm, the former midfielder said the Pharaohs now have every chance to qualify for their first World Cup since the year 1990.

Stephen Appiah who played a key role in Ghana’s first World Cup qualification in 2006, implied that only a miracle can make Ghana qualify for the global game. He explained that the Black Stars still have an outside chance, but it’s a slim one and relies on the Pharaohs slipping up. According to him;
“The only way we can qualify is if Egypt decide that they don’t want to go the World Cup again and slow down in the remaining matches”.
Ghana truly needs a breakthrough in their remaining four clashes, as the team has so much to make up for in order to qualify for the World Cup. The four time African champions are third in group E, five points adrift of leaders Egypt and will have to wait until next year, before their ambition of qualifying for the world Cup would be settled.
This simply means that, the Black Stars’ clash with Congo in August 2017, is indeed crucial to their survival for the Russian World Cup.
