Glenn Hoddle, Harry Redknapp, and Zico are some of the names being linked with the Black Stars coaching job which gets grander by the day.
Officially, Ghana is not looking for a new coach. Unofficially, the Ghana Football Association is looking and many coaches around the world are leaking their interests through intermediaries to ensure that when the process becomes official, they will be there and about in the mix.
As the GFA considers its next step, the communication and PR machinery of many coaches are in full gear. Former French international Willy Sagnol claimed he was in advanced talks to replace Avram Grant. The GFA called that false.
Uganda coach Milutin Sreidojevic is considered firm favourite. Now media reports claim former England boss Glenn Hoddle is interested. An intermediary for former Tettenham manager Harry Redknap also claims he would be happy to become Ghana coach because he ‘feels he can win something’ with the Black Stars.
Brazil legend Zico has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Sports journalist Michael Oti Adjei says there are likely to be many more big names mentioned without much substance to it until a substantive boss is named.
Meanwhile, Gerrard Nus, who was one of Avram Grant’s assistant during the 2015 and 2017 tournaments says he feels he can fill the void created by his former boss.
“I don’t feel I should apply for the job because here everyone knows me and what I can do’, he said. I assisted Grant in reaching two Nations Cups, we reached one final which was great. In that sense, I know this Ghana team well and understand African football so I am ready to coach here or anywhere on the continent,” he told TV3.
The GFA has been silent on the process since Grant left. Ghana has no competitive game until June this year when the 2019 Nations Cup qualifiers begin and the football association is confident it has enough time to be able to make a sound choice.
