Anencephaly is the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp that occurs during embryonic development. Children born with this disorder usually lack an essential part of the brain -the telencephalon, which consists mainly of the cerebral hemispheres, including the neocortex, which is responsible for cognition.
Infants with this disorder only survive a few hours and at most a few days after birth.
