INDIAN High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Birender Singh Yadav has paid a courtesy call on the new Ashanti Regional Minister Hon Simon Osei Mensah.
Even though the meeting was held behind close doors, Press Secretary to the regional minister Gabriel Amoah told the media the meeting was aimed at how the region and the government of India could build and deepen the existing relationship between the two.
High on the agenda he noted was about exploring avenues for economic and cultural development of the two countries.
Another important issue they discussed was the energy sector and how they can help in tackling them.
The meeting of the two personalities was also to find ways to enhance economic as well as cultural partnership, while making sure the Ashanti Region benefits from the numerous exchange programmes available.
India, according to the High Commissioner, wants to explore how they can work to promote culture and traditions in the Ashanti Region.
The High Commissioner said his country was aware of the rich traditions of the region, and would, therefore, ensure that there is an exchange cultural programme between India and Ashanti region.
Mr Birender Yadav said “Ashanti has unique and great traditions and culture, and we will be happy to be part of it”.
The Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei Mensah on his part pushed for a trade exhibition programme between Ghana and India as a way to open the two countries to the many economic and investment opportunities.
He said the region will continue to work to deepen the existing relationship between the region and India.
Earlier in the day, the Ashanti Regional branch of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) also paid a courtesy call on the minister.
According to the National Executives of NUGS they were there to congratulate the minister on his appointment, and also to discuss with him, ways for the two to build a solid foundation for the smooth take-off of the government’s free education programme.
