Former president John Mahama has lauded the setting up of an independent prosecutor’s office saying it is “another step forward” in the “quest to fight corruption.”
President Nana Addo promised to set up the office and appoint an individual whose duties will include hunting down as well as prosecuting people who mismanage the public purse.
Speculations are rife that lawyer Akoto Ampaw, a partner of Akufo-Addo’s law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co is being tipped for the job.
Speaking in Kenya earlier Saturday morning, Mr Mahama said he must be independent enough to carry out his duties successfully.
“The new administration in Ghana has decided to introduce an independent prosecutor.
“That’s another step forward after NACAP and other interventions in the quest to fight corruption.
“But the independent prosecutor must be independent enough and prosecute cases even if from within this admin,” he told a gathering of economic and political players.
