Barely 24hrs after the President inaugurated a committee to take oversight responsibility of the country’s diamond jubilee celebration, there are already some images of a Ghana @60 cloth circulating on social media.
President Akufo-Addo on Thursday charged a 30-member planning committee to keep him and the Ghanaian nation abreast systematically and regularly of the plans and the financial implication so that the whole exercise can be done with full transparency.
The committee is chaired by Mr. Ken Amankwah with Deputy Chief of Staff Samuel Jinapor as his Vice Chair.
The committee is yet to commence work in earnest but already some alleged Ghana at 60 cloths images are making waves on social media.
Many people have questioned the rationale for the setup of such a committee.
In 2007 a similar committee was set up by the then NPP administration and tasked to organise the country’s Golden jubilee celebrate.
The committee which operated as a secretariat oversaw the celebration that was later fraught with allegations of massive appropriations of funds and corruption.
Dr. Wereko-Brobbey CEO of the planning committee for [email protected] and Former Chief of Staff, and Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani, were accused of financial malfeasance and also recommended for prosecution by a 3-member committee set up by Late President Mills.
They were in August 2010, discharged by an Accra Fast Track High Court of charges of wilfully causing financial loss to the State and were subsequently discharged by a Court of Appeal on the grounds that the charges levelled against them were instituted in breach of their fundamental human rights.
There is yet to be any word from the committee concerning the cloths that have allegedly been imported into the country for the celebration.
Ghana will on 6th march 2017 mark its 60 years after independence.
The Akufo-Addo inaugurated committee has about six weeks to work to ensure the planned activities are properly executed.
