Barely a week after winning the 2016 elections, the reality is now dawning on some, as MP-elect George Andah fears if the New Patriotic Party would be able to meet the high expectations of Ghanaians.
Mr. Andah who defeated Foreign Affairs Minister Hanna Tetteh in the Awutu Senya West parliamentary election admitted: “I am scared about the gaping hole the NDC has created for us to deal with.”
He however noted, “… it’s a similar situation in 2000 when President Kufuor took office. The good thing is that this time around we know what the issues are. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as far as the economy is concerned has flagged the issues severally; so it’s going to be a difficult task but nothing is impossible, we need to turn the economy around.”
The marketing tycoon, who disclosed this to host of 3FM’s Sunrise Show, Winston Amoah, however added that he is confident a Nana Addo-led administration is up to the task.
“So far as having the right men and women with the brains and a high level of commitment I don’t see that as being a challenge at all.
“Yet the task is big, that’s why we’ve elected Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who has the right qualities to fix the economy and turn things around.”
Even though the MP-elect admitted the NDC government may have done some work, he maintains it was abysmal compared to the resources available to them.
“To be fair, I won’t say the NDC and former member of Parliament, Hanna Tetteh haven’t done anything but Ghanaians and the people of Awutu Senya West think they deserve better than what the NDC has done over the past four to eight years.
“It is therefore imperative that we are mindful of the fact that the people are extremely conscious of their concerns, much more discerning so we must deliver on our promises. There’s no problem about delivery.
“It won’t be easy but we must deliver. Whatever promises and policies we have made, I don’t see any that are impossible. When we started talking about free Senior High School education in 2012, there were lots of doubts that we couldn’t do it but getting to the end of the election the NDC said it had started free SHS.
“When we started talking about one district one factory the NDC said it had built the Komenda Sugar Factory. Listen you can’t take the people for granted.”
Asked how the NPP government intends funding all the ambitious projects, George Andah was emphatic about the establishment of an independent prosecutor for recovering moneies from government officials and others citizens who have stolen from the State coffers.
“Why do you think Nana Addo has set up an office of special prosecutor? There is so much that is being wasted in terms of people in office stealing money that belongs to the people of Ghana. So much has been wasted in terms of corruption; there’s no value for money in significant number of projects undertaken.
“During President Kufour’s tenure, one kilometer six inches asphalt road was being done for five hundred thousand dollars. Under this administration however, the same road is being done at a cost of one million five hundred thousand dollars.
“The price of crude was 90 to hundred dollars then it came down to thirty-eight dollars. Asphalt is a by-product of crude so when it doesn’t make sense that on a dollar basis, you are paying three times for the same project. So when the impression is created that government is working for Ghana, they are actually stealing people’s money.
“What it means is that all these moneies can go into provision of portable water, dams, and infrastructural development.
He concluded that Ghana is not poor but has only suffered from poor leadership and greedy and persons around the leaders.
“Ghana is not poor, we’ve just had bad leaders and selfish and unpatriotic peoples around leaders. We thank God for the election of Nana Addo.
“Bear in mind this is the first time in the history of Ghana that an opposition has won an election convincingly without a second round of elections.
“It’s a statement by Ghanaians that if you come into power and mess around, disrespect us, mismanage our money and are incompetent, we will vote you out.”
