President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission (EC) for organizing what he describes as a “credible” election.
Akufo-Addo in an acceptance speech at his Nima residence in Accra expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the elections and commended supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for maintaining peace before and during the elections.
Addressing hundreds of supporters and pressmen on Friday [December 9], he said he will be a President for all Ghanaians and will work for the common good of the country.
He called on party supporters to be moderate in their celebration and respect the rights of other individuals in the country especially political opponents.
He reminded party supporters that the NPP was a party of rule of law and therefore they must conduct themselves as such.
Nana Akufo-Addo also expressed his appreciation to various political and religious leaders for their counsel and support in helping him win the elections.
He called on all Ghanaian to support him as he leads the country for the next four-years assuring that he will be a president for all.
He further assured that all promises he made while on the campaign trail will be honoured during his term in office.
Nana Akufo-Addo was on Friday declared winner of the 2016 Presidential elections after winning 53.85% of valid votes cast, ahead of his major contender, President John Mahama’s 44.40%.
Many media outlets had projected a significant lead for the three-timer early Friday morning.
The incumbent President, John Mahama came under intense pressure especially from the opposition NPP to conceded defeat to the President but that was not until later in the evening when Mahama called Akufo-Addo over the phone to congratulate him on his victory.
The Electoral Commission (EC) subsequently declared the official results, that saw Akufo-Addo being declared President-elect of Ghana.
Akufo-Addo becomes the 5th President in the 4th Republic of Ghana.
