The Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor has stated that the police administration will deal ruthlessly with groups or individuals who will engage in hooliganism during December polls.
To this end, the IGP further cautioned the citizenry to desist from engaging in acts that will mar the success of the elections.
The Police chief encouraged the citizenry to play their respective roles during the elections devoid of acts that will trigger violence.
While entreating police officers to execute their duties professionally and desist from influencing the electoral process, he further warned that any policeman who is found dabbling in partisan politics will face the full rigours of the law.
Addressing men and women of the service at Oforikrom, a suburb of Kumasi during the commissioning of a residential accommodation, he assured that the elections will be supervised in a peaceful manner and expressed optimism that it will be one of the country’s best.
‘Very soon the election will be coming and we as the police institution are going to be very professional, impartial and neutral as possible. We will ensure that all citizenry also play by the rules which we ourselves have come out to police the election to ensure that no hooliganism or malfeasances in any form are tolerated. Though we are not the main players or arbiters, our demeanour will go a very long way to influence the outcome of the election and we are once again ensuring the good meaning Ghanaians that before, during and after the election, Ghana will come out in one whole piece and not in pieces,’ he promised.
On his part, the Ashanti regional Police Commander COP Nathan Kofi Boakye pledged that the service will be fair to all the political parties.
He warned that the police will resist any attempt by any group of persons to police ballot boxes.
‘Police in Ashanti region are going to work assiduously, professionally without discrimination in the coming elections; we are going to be firm and fair to all the political parties. We are not going to tolerate any group of people who will want to arrogate to themselves the power of policing ballot boxes, that is unthinkable, it can never happen,’ he warned.
