The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has noted that the actions and inactions of some police personnel are unfortunately often highlighted to overshadow the good efforts and achievements of the majority.
Mr David Asante-Apeatu said this had largely accounted for the derogatory remarks often made against personnel of the Service.
He made the observation at the closing ceremony of the Junior Command Course 7/2017 made of 10 females and 43 males at the Ghana Police Command and Staff College in Winneba in the Central region.
He said the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) was the face of the Service, and as long as its personnel on the roads and highways continued to exhibit a low level of professionalism, it may be difficult to have a better image rating in the eyes of the public.
It was in response to some of these poor ratings that compelled the Police Administration to suspend motor checks on the roads, he said.
He said as part of Ghana Police Reformation Strategies, the MTTD would undergo a robust restructuring in order to establish a more professional and civil oriented Department that would effectively discharge its mandate without reproach.
Mr Asante-Apeatu said the MTTD deserved a new look, and it was in this respect, that he had directed a nationwide internal recruitment, screening and retaining of all personnel who constituted it.
“I am expecting nothing but, world class police officers who will better serve all of us as road users and also deal with recalcitrant and reckless road users,” he added.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr Gariba Sayibu Pabi, Commandant of the College, said the Junior Command Course 7/2017 was the seventh batch of officers, who have been schooled at the college since its establishment in November, 2013.
He said, in line with the motor of the college: “Leadership and Professionalism,” the intensive nature of the course developed student endurance, capacity and capability, effectiveness and required discipline to help better and with regard encourage them and implement the knowledge acquired to enhance the College Motor: “Leadership and Professionalism.”
