Residents of Banda Ahenkro in the Brong Ahafo Region should disregard threats of attacks on them by some locals within the area, Ahmed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Banda, has said.
According to him, there is no such group as Concerned Members of Banda Ahenkro.
On Tuesday 14 March, a letter written by the group said: “This is to inform all strangers working in this community/school that we are not ready to stay peacefully with you in this community. If you do not leave this district, then we cannot guarantee your safety here. What is happening to strangers in South Africa will happen to you or what happened in Faith School in 2016 will repeat itself. We cannot sit down for you to take our job opportunities from us.”
However, speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday 15 March, Mr Ibrahim said: “There is no such group in Banda. Whoever did that must be ashamed of himself.
“We have no difficulty in searching for jobs because we are mainly farmers and nobody has taken over any farmland. This is a typical rural area, a very deprived community which even wants more people to come to that area and so how can they drive others away. Xenophobic attacks cannot happen in Ghana, let alone in Banda.”
