A group calling itself, Concerned Volta Youth, has registered their displeasure at the intention of government to split the Volta Region into two, describing the move as, “myopic and callous.”
According to the group, the intention to split the region into two was based on political interest rather than national.
A statement issued and signed by the Press Secretary to the Group and Convener, Sessi Dela Renny and Jean-Claude Koku Amenyaglo respectively debunked reasons that the split will necessitate development in the region.
The statement argued that the cost which would be incurred while creating a new region can be invested in infrastructure project in the region.
The statement added that what the region needed was rather a railway network system from northern Volta to southern Volta, which will aid them in conveying goods.
The group disclosed that northern Volta has more territories than southern Volta and senior high schools in the Volta north receive high government scholarships than schools in the south, “so the splitting of the region is not necessary.”
The group further rubbished the argument that the split will necessitate development.
According to the group, however, the creation of a new region will only put burden on the government since government will have to employ extra administrative staff.
The group in the statement asked: “Can’t the resources that will be used for the creation of the region be channeled into the development of the northern Volta?”
To this end, the statement appealed to government to consider infrastructure development for the region instead of splitting it.
The group also accused past governments of deliberately failing the people of the Volta Region.
