Attorney General and Minister of Justice nominee Gloria Akuffo has said she will take a second look at the controversial GHS51million paid to businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome and do what is best for the country by recovering the money for the state.
The Supreme Court has ordered Mr Woyome to refund GHS51.2 million to the state.
According to the court, Mr Woyome got the money out of an invalid contract between the state and Waterville Holdings Limited in 2006 for the construction of stadia for CAN 2008.
However, the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government failed to retrieve the amount from the businessman before leaving office.
Gloria Akuffo told the Appointments Committee when she appeared before it on Saturday January 21 that if given the nod to be Attorney General, she would do her best to recover the money for the state.
“As I understand it, judgment has been entered for the refund of the money. Efforts to recover the money have been inundated with many applications. My understanding is that the execution process has been soiled with all these processes.
I will go to office and look [but] that is why I said at the beginning that I cannot make a categorical undertaking that if you give me approval tomorrow, I can recover the money because this is a matter which is subject to litigation.
I can only say that when I get there I’ll study the file and see how quickly we can recover the money,” she stated.
“I will put my best foot forward and that when I get to that office I will look at the matter and do what is best in the circumstances.”
