“If this new dawn of the relationship between the Volta Region and the NPP materializes on December 7, I promise you I will never, ever let you down. I will stay true to all the commitments I have made to you. We have a team of men and women with competence, imagination and ability who are ready to take on the task of bringing prosperity to our country again”.
These were the words of the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, when he addressed a mammoth rally at Aflao, the venue for the NPP’s Volta Regional Rally, on Sunday, November 20, 2016.
It will be recalled that the NPP flagbearer, whilst beginning the 1st phase of his Volta Regional Campaign in May 2016, stated his desire of working to turn a new leaf in the relationship between the people of the Volta Region and the NPP.
He reiterated this commitment stressing that “the new leaf of co-operation and of friendship will bring about development of the Volta Region and the development of Ghana.”
Nana Akufo-Addo told the thousands and thousands gathered at Aflao that “I stand ready to develop the Volta region and Ghana. We are going to accelerate the exploration of oil in the Voltain Basin to make sure that what we did in the Western Region is repeated in the Volta Region.”
The NPP flagbearer assured that “we are going to build a new harbour in Keta, in collaboration with the private sector, and build new landing sites and cold storage facilities so that we can get the fishing communities in the coastal areas working again.”
In addition to these, Nana Akufo-Addo noted that the NPP’s programme of national redevelopment and expansion would mean that “every district in Ghana, and in the Volta Region for that matter, is going to have one factory that is going to help create jobs for the unemployed.
“We are going to redirect the capital budget of our nation so that the money comes directly to you. Every constituency, every year, is going to get the equivalent of $1 million to address the issues of infrastructural development, sanitation, amongst others, at the local level.”
Just as he has done in all parts of the country throughout his campaign, Nana Akufo-Addo pledged that his government is going to “revive the National Health Insurance Scheme and make it work again”, a programme which, he says, “is suffering under John Mahama.”
He also affirmed his commitment to the effective implementation of the Free SHS policy, assuring residents of the Volta Region that “we have thought through all these policies and, if by the grace of God I win, we are going to implement all these policies to the letter so that our country can get relief, development and progress.”
With President Mahama embarking on a tribal and ethnic-based campaign in the North, in his bid to win the election, Nana Akufo-Addo remained confident that the people of Ghana will not pay heed to such campaigns.
“Ghanaians want a united country that is going forward. They want to build a prosperous, free and democratic Ghana. We are turning our backs on tribalism and petty politics. We are turning our backs on the politics of yesterday, the politics of propaganda and deceit. That will not be the politics of the future of our country,” the NPP flagbearer added.
He continued, “We are looking to build a new Ghana, founded on commitment, truth and principle. A Ghana that works, where policies are worked out for the progress of our people, which will bring jobs to the young people of our country. That is the Ghana we are fighting for, that is the Ghana we seek on the December 7.”
Nana Akufo-Addo was optimistic that “the good people of the Volta Region are ready for this new path, a new path of development, progress and prosperity. We are turning our back on years of stagnation, of incompetence and massive corruption. We are charting a new path of progress and prosperity.”
He, thus, appealed for the support of the people of the Region, stressing that “I want your support to help me implement the programmes we have laid in our manifesto and before you. All of us should ride on the back of the Elephant and help push the Elephant into the Jubilee House, so we can do a job for all Ghanaians without discrimination.”.
