Queenmother of Atuna, a farming community in the Jaman South district of the Brong Ahafo region has vowed to fight illegal miners in her area.
Nana Brago Kani who led her people in a demonstration Friday in an interview with Adom News’ Koofori Bossu Denkye said the illegal miners known in local parlance as galamseyers have destroyed all their lands and water bodies.
She explained that, people in communities like Komfourkrom, Bobunu, Konsia, Kwameprakrom, Baatia, Powde3, Ntaabene and Atuna mainly cocoa and cashew farmers have been rendered jobless because their farms have been destroyed by the galamsey.
Nana Brago stressed “if it will take my blood to maintain the Atuna and its environs farming land, I will fight back the illegal miners.”
She appealed to Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and President Nana Akufo-Addo to clampdown the illegal mining activities in the area to save their lands.
In support, the youth in the area have also formed a vigilante group to match the galamsey operators boot-for-boot.
Youth leader, Salifu Amaneampong said they won’t allow illegal miners to destroy the lands their forefathers left for them.
“We will fight to protect our lands; we don’t want any gold issues we need help from the President Nana Akufo-Addo” he stated.
