The Progressive People’s Party parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, William Dowokpor, has assured the people he would prioritise the needs of all elected to serve the constituency.
Speaking at the launch of his campaign in Accra, he promised to be a member of parliament who will represents the interest of all constituents irrespective of their political affiliation.
He observed the constituency has more human, infrastructural and financial resources than any other in the country, yet is experiencing stagnation due to poor political leadership.
Mr Dowokpor gave the assurance at the launch of his campaign at the University of Ghana at the weekend under the theme “Change is Coming, Get Involved.”
He said the constituency will experience reliable utility and public services, security of life and property and jobs for the youth under his leadership.
“I will revive the Residents’ Associations that are currently comatose and organise them into active community interest groups that will engage the city authorities on daily basis to ensure public services due them in the constituency are delivered” he said.
William Dowokpor said if he wins the election to be in parliament, his focus would be on three key constitutional reforms that will make government work in the interest of the people.
“As your MP, I will push for the reforms that will allow you to elect the Mayor of Accra. I will advocate for amendment to the constitution, to separate the executive from the legislature as a way of strengthening parliament, which is currently weak, and under the control of the executive.
“I will advocate for the establishment of the office of the Independent Public Prosecutor (IPP) to replace the current office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice who is under the firm control of the executive and therefore disabled to fight corruption without fear or favour,” he said.
Speaking on security challenges facing students of the University of Ghana, Mr Dowokpor said he would engage the Police Service on the need to augment the University’s security apparatus to deal with the security threats on campus.
On the loan scheme, the PPP candidate said a study he did revealed the amount given to students is inadequate, hence the needed increase it by at least 200% to make any meaningful impact in the lives of students who rely on it on campus.
“I understand the government and the loans trust people are afraid to give you more because they are not sure you will get any jobs after school to pay back the loans. That is an indictment on government isn’t it?’ he queried.
“But don’t worry, the creator of jobs, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom is here with us and he will tell you, how jobs will be created on sustainable basis in a moment” he assured the students.
Mr Dowokpor also assured that he would work with the authorities to make them understand the importance of allowances for graduate studies so that they give it the priority it deserves.
“Under my leadership as your MP, I will engage the authorities to ensure the allowances are released on schedule and in adequate amounts that will make your graduate work financially stress free” he said.
He thus urged university community come on-board his campaign to bring change to Ghana and the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
