President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for prayers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, and Ghanaians in general, in order to be a “good leader” for Ghana. He also asked for prayers for his appointees “so we are inspired by the Almighty to do a good job for Ghana”.
President Akufo-Addo made this request on Thursday, February 16 when a delegation from the Mission led by Ameer Maulvi Mohammed bin Salih called on him at the Flagstaff House.
The delegation made up of members of the Mission’s National Executive Council was at the presidency to thank President Akufo-Addo for gracing the 85th anniversary celebration of the Mission last month.
Maulvi bin Salih observed that Ghana’s problems over the years have been due to lack of leadership but the result of the December 7 elections “proved that Ghana is mature and is ready to take back its place in the comity of nations”.
He expressed confidence that under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, Ghana will thrive. “I am not prophesying, I don’t prophesy.
I am only talking out of my convictions.” He also invited the president to the Annual Worldwide Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission scheduled to be held in London from July 28 – 30. “You will become the very first President ever to attend this event [if you honour the invitation].”
President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the delegation, recollecting how the late head of the Mission, Maulvi Wahab Adam worked closely with him during the John Kufuor era.
“Your predecessor was one of my principal counselors, a deeply religious person and a man of integrity. As Attorney General, I had the privilege of recommending him to President Kufuor for appointment as a member of the National Reconciliation Commission, which was set up to heal the wounds of the nation after decades of military rule.
He excelled in the work of the Commission and was one of its driving forces.” But he ultimately asked for prayers to excel in his presidency. “Pray to God to give me wisdom, courage and make me a compassionate leader.
“I want to be an honest leader, a good leader and one who will be remembered as having contributed significantly to the progress and welfare of Ghana.”
