It is unnecessary for a President of a country to have security when its people are not even safe and that is why I would reject security detail if I become the President of Ghana, the leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigri Mahama has said.
He believes it is of no use for an entire security detail to be imposed on a President when that same protection could rather be given the entire populace.
“The life I live now as Mahama, as a doctor or as a father, is the same life I would live as President of Ghana when I am elected. I am a simple man and would be unnecessary to have security following me all day,” he said.
The PNC flagbearer was speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Wednesday.
Dr Mahama and 12 other presidential hopefuls were disqualified after the EC detected anomalies on their nomination forms.
Following legal tussles that began in the High Court and ended in the Supreme Court, the apex court ordered the EC to allow the affected candidates correct the errors and resubmit them.
Consequently, three of the parties were given the nod by the EC to contest.
The Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, NDP’s Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings and the PNC’s Mahama were cleared to contest in the upcoming Presidential elections on Wednesday as the EC approved of their respective party’s resubmitted presidential nomination forms after reviewing it.
But Mr Mahama who believes the Mahama administration has mismanaged the economy pointed out that the money which would be used to protect him as a President would rather be used to fix the economy.
“As President of Ghana, I will live a simple life and the money that will be used to protect me will be used to fix the economy because sometimes even with these security around, you can still be killed.
“If am not mistaken, Abraham Linclon who was then the US President was shot, Kwame Nkrumah was shot on his compound so let us not believe that the security we have can protect us 100 percent” he insisted.
