Hundreds of sympathizers have converged on Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, to mark the one-week celebration of the passing of the queen-mother of the Ashanti Kingdom, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
Apart from the people from the region, scores of government officials and politicians have also joined the chiefs to mourn with the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Andy Okrah spoke to Citi News on the grounds and confirmed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, President John Mahama has suspended his campaign activities and is due in Kumasi to join mourners.
“This is not the time for us to be dong partisan politics in this period. We have to mourn with the king and Asante kingdom.”
“If it has happened to the Asante Kingdom and the occupants of the Golden Stool, the Asantehene, then it has happened to the nation. That is the reason why his Excellency, John Mahama has to leave the Upper East and run here to Kumasi to mourn,” Mr. Okrah said.
He also indicated that “people who have come from the United Kingdom, from Nigeria and many other parts who are coming to mourn with the king of Ashanti.”
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo will also be heading to the Kumasi to join Asanteman mourn the death of Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi.
Nana Addo has also suspended his campaign activities is expected at the Manhyia Palace to take part in the traditional ceremony later today[Thursday]
