Barcelona had suffered an emphatic 4-0 defeat at PSG’s home in Paris – PSG’s home two weeks ago. After being thrashed in the first leg of the last-16 tie, Barca appeared set to fall agonisingly short of a possible recovery. But outgoing coach Luis Enrique expressed high hopes that his side can “score six” to advance in what would be the most remarkable second-leg comeback in the history of the competition.
“If they can score four, we can score six,” Luis Enrique had said prior to the match.
Hopes of a remarkable comeback were stirred after only 150 seconds, Suarez getting the goal. In the next forty minutes, Barca was 2-0 ahead, following an error inside the area which gave Iniesta the opportunity to put the ball back near the goal with Kurzawa kneeing the ball into his own goal.
Shortly after half-time, Barcelona were 3-0 ahead and within one goal of completing the comeback. Barca was awarded a penalty after Neymar surged into the area and been felled by Meunier’s head after the defender lost his footing, with Messi stepping up and blasting past Trapp from 12 yards.
Barca was taking the lead in striking throughout the game, while PSG was more focused on defense – a playing style we never thought put the latter in the lead in the first leg 4-0 win.
Every time PSG tried to get out of their half, a blue and red shirt is quick to charge them down and take the ball away. But some minutes later, PSG got a hugely important away goal to make it 3-1 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate.
PSG almost got an invaluable away goal in response when Meunier beat Neymar at the other end and squared for Cavani, whose sliding left-footed effort struck the post from six yards.
Second change for Barcelona as Sergi Roberto comes on to replace Rafinha. And Few minutes to full time, Aubameyang got a hat-trick and Dortmund kept the goal scoring going. They’re now 4-0 up and 4-1 on aggregate.
Di Maria with a chance to truly put the game to bed but he misses the target with Ter Stegen to beat and an on-rushing Mascherano to deal with.
Neymar’s free kick in the final minute made it 4-1 on the night and Barcelona were awarded a last minute penalty as Suarez went down under a challenge from Marquinhos. Neymar converted the spot-kick to make it 5-1, but Baraca was still behind 5-5 on aggregate.
And, unbelievably, in the final seconds, with Barcelona needing one more goal, Sergi Roberto struck to make it 6-5 and put to bed one of the most incredible games in Champions League history!
And so… The Calatan Giants scored three more goals in seven minutes and 17 seconds in the Barcelona vs PSG match – at the 88th, 91st, and then 94 min. 39 secs!
No team has ever overturned a 4-0 first-leg deficit in the history of UEFA Champions League at this stage of the game. That was how Barcelona broke records and made history last night.
