The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu is embarking on a delicate exercise in the Northern region to convince members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who are poised on contesting the forthcoming parliamentary elections as independent candidates to reconsider their decision.
Some aggrieved members of the NDC who lost during its parliamentary primaries including Daniel Nsala Wakpal for Kpandai Constituency, Tampi Acheampong Simon and Thomas Borepong Laten for the Sanguli Constituency and Alhassan Iddrisu Bunglung for the Savelugu constituency all in the region, seem unrelenting in their resolve to run as independent candidates.
Deep-throat disclosed to ultimatefmonline.com, that the employment minister is intervening in the impasse to ensure that the candidates back down and rather throw their support behind the NDC candidates in the affected constituencies.
So far, the independent candidates in Kpandai and Sanguli have agreed and stepped aside after series of meetings with the minister who reportedly moved them out of town on the last day for candidates to file their nomination papers at the Electoral Commission.
The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South when reached on phone, refused to confirm or deny his intervention in the matter stating that it is purely an internal party affair.
“My brother, this is party matter and I will want us to leave it at that. If there is the need for the media to be involved, you will get to know”, he said.
Meanwhile, efforts to convince candidates in Savelugu and Tamale North constituency where renowned broadcast Journalist, Alhassan Suhuyini is contesting, seem to have hit a deadlock.
A close source to the minister however revealed that negotiations are still ongoing barely two months to the December 7 polls to boost the NDC’s chances.
Haruna Iddrisu is among the 15-member Northern Regional Campaign Taskforce headed by Minister of Food and Agriculture Alhaji Mohammed Muniru-Limuna.
