Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has begun water rationing in the Sunyani Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region due to inadequate water in the municipality.
Assistant Manager at the Abesim Water Head Works, Yakubu Mumuni, in an interview with Today said: GWCL was not able to produce the needed quantity of water for the municipality, as a result of the reduction in natural water for production.
Mr. Mumuni revealed that GWCL’s inability to meet its demand was also due to the polluted nature of the Tano River by activities of galamseyers (illegal miners).
According to him, the activities of illegal miners and farmers have affected the flowing of water to downstream where GWCL head works was situated.
“We are pumping 700 to 750 gallons a day to the Sunyani municipality and its environs instead of 1.5 million gallons we are supposed to produce. We are not getting the needed natural water for our production,” he said.
