Ghana Taekwondo Federation has postponed this year’s National Junior Championship to the 3rd week in due to their inability to secure a venue.
Finding a venue for the competition has been a bane for the federation following the refusal of the national sports authority to permit them usage of the national sports hall at the Accra Sports Stadium.
President of the Federation, Frederick Otu Lartey who felt very worried about the decision to shift the date said, “they are working on another venue which will be announced soon”.
“It is a fact that the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium has been the only Hall which hosts many Sports programs and for that matter became a worry to the federation. Facilities there don’t work efficiently. This is as a result of the National Sports Authority’s huge debt”.
The Federation in January held its 8th Korean cup championship at the Sports Hall and had problems with the air condition which couldn’t allow many invited guests to stay and enjoy the event.
This, the international Taekwondo referee believes, may ward off sponsors should they still use the Accra Sports Stadium Hall.
“Our Junior championship is not coming off this month basically because we were having challenges with venue. Accra Sports Stadium is the venue we have used for all our programs and now they don’t have electricity”.
“The last time in January that we had our 8th Korean Cup championship, we had challenges. Though we bought fuel, the generators were not responding and the place was very hot. You know, if somebody has sponsored you, a cooperate entity want to advertise their products and even spectators and invited guests cannot stay at the program, then what are you telling the sponsors”, he asked?.
According to Otu Lartey, they have applied to GPHA in Tema for a venue for the championship which will see practitioners between the ages of 15 and 17 have the opportunity to be groomed.
