The Graduate Students Association of Ghana, (GRASAG) has given government a three day ultimatum to pay their delayed research allowances or face their wrath.
This follows the failure of the Finance Ministry to release the 2015/16 grants to students pursuing various Masters and Ph. D programmes in public tertiary institutions across the country.
In an interview with Adom News after their demonstration in a Accra, on Wednesday 28th September 2016, to register their displeasure to the government and Ghanaians over their long standing unpaid allowances, the Legon-GRASAG President, Nana Akwasi Asafo-Agyei said they had given government 72hrs to meet their demands otherwise they would advise themselves.
He said it is inconceivable that government will drag its feet in paying paltry sum of GHs700.00 to post-graduate students in fields such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master of Arts (MA).
Mr Asafo-Agyei cited the delays in the release of grants in the 2012/13 and 2014/15 academic years as testaments of government’s maltreatment of GRASAG members over the years.
He expressed gratitude at the various tertiary student groups across the country, who gave them their support during the demonstration.
Mr Asafo-Agyei was also grateful to the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu for persuading the Deputy Finance Minister, Ato Forson, who declined to meet them earlier to receive their petition, to rescind his decision to receive their petition on behalf of government.
