A Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Michael Boakye-Yiadom, is urging the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) and the university community to be innovative and devise means of generating funds internally to foot research expenses.
Addressing a press briefing in Accra, the lecturer at the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration said the Association is over-reliant on government for thesis and bursary grant.
He made this known while addressing the press as chairman of a GRASAG event.
The event was themed: ‘Enhancing Graduate Experience in Ghanaian Tertiary Institutions’.
Dr. Boakye-Yiadom said the presence of the Graduate Unemployment Association only exposes the shortfalls in the educational system, adding that universities must involve students in project-based activities.
With the alarming number of unemployed graduates, he also urged graduates to move beyond their boundaries and challenge the status quo.
He suggested a shift from the traditional models of education to a more comprehensive model and urged graduates to move from functional silos to do more research.
He called on the entire university community, the National Accreditation Board and the National Council for Tertiary Education to help restructure the system and teach students the lessons of leadership, integrity and patriotism.
He also urged government to train and employ graduates to do administrative work in universities.
