Government is to revamp the Sunyani Airport which has been out of use for the past two years, Aviation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has announced.
The Sunyani Airport which used to serve domestic flights has been out of use partly due to structural defects that have affected both the tarmac and the runway.
At a day’s working to the Airport, the minister expressed concerns about encroachment on the Airport lands, a situation she observed would make it difficult for immediate extension to be done.
Madam Dapaah used the occasion to meet with two chiefs, Nana Kwame Korang and Nana Kwesi Yeboah of the Odumase Traditional Council that leased the land for the Airport, to discuss the issue of encroachment on the airport lands.
She also met with the Nsoatre Traditional Council which released lands for the extension of the airport but yet to be utilised. She discussed with the Nsoatre Chief, Nana Professor Boachie Amoa Konomansa the possibility of using the said land.
At a meeting with the Aviation staff, she commended them for their dedication to work as well as ensure that the installations in place at the Airport are protected.
In an interview with TV3, Madam Dapaah said she would ensure that government plans for expanding the Airport is carried out to open up the Brong Ahafo Region to bring about socio-economic development.
