Chief Executive Officer of MP Ghana Limited, Michael Mbilla, has called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to encourage the use of bamboo and raffia products.
Michael Mbilla, whose company specialises in bamboo and raffia products, said: “Ghana is sitting on goldmine but much has not been done to encourage the use of bamboo and raffia products.”
Mr. Mbilla who was in China for a three-month training in bamboo usage expressed worry about the under-utilisation of bamboo in the country.
He therefore called on the Akufo-Addo-led government to encourage the use of bamboo and raffia products in the country.
“China is utilising bamboo and making huge amount to build its economy. Whatever you can use wood to manufacture you can use bamboo too. We have bamboo in abundance in Ghana but nothing is being done to encourage the youth to take it as a business.”
Mr. Mbilla noted that the use of bamboo and raffia products would decrease the importation of furniture.
It is estimated that Ghana’s annual importation of furniture stands at millions of cedis.
