Mr Jacob Wayo McCarthy, the 2016 Accra Metropolitan Best farmer, has called on Government to facilitate training programmes for the youth and farmers so that they can participate in the lucrative beekeeping business.
Adequate orientation in new technologies should be provided for the youth to participate in various farming initiatives.
Mr McCarthy said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the 32 National Farmers and Fishermen’s Day celebration.
The event was held under the theme: ‘’ Agriculture: A Business Response To Economic Growth’’ in Accra.
‘’ We need to identify the talents and desires of the youth and work at harnessing them but we cannot do it alone without government’s support’’, he said.
Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, said Government has made substantial investment into the construction of roads to link the rural communities and this is part of its commitment to use agriculture as a tool to break the cycle of poverty.
He said the Eastern and Western corridor roads, amply affirms the commitment of government to link up the rural areas with the urban ones.
He expressed regret that many farmers in Ghana still rely on rainfall for water yet the pattern and quantities are becoming irregular, hence the need for them to learn new technologies and practices which can help them adapt to climate change.
Nii Afotey Agbo said climate change was causing immense havoc to food production and it is important for all stakeholders to share ideas on best practices on agriculture and fishing.
He called on the chiefs in the Greater Accra Region release lands to the youth for agricultural activities.
Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), urged the award winners to continue with their exemplary roles so that the undecided and unemployed youth would realise the benefits of the lucrative agriculture sector.
