The reading festival, which started with a float to create awareness brought together public basic pupils across the district to take part in spelling bees, poetry recitals and pick and act at Gomoa Ekwamkrom on Tuesday.
The 2016 reading festival, which was held under theme “Learn to Read, Read to Learn” is also aiming to increase the reading skills of approximately 2.8 million Ghanaian primary school pupils from KG1 to primary 3.
Addressing the gathering, the Gomoa East District Education Director, Mr. Robert Mensah, expressed his profound gratitude on behalf of the district to the USAID, for building the district a new furnished education directorate office block, as well as providing reading materials for all primary schools in the district.
This he said, has enhanced teaching and learning in order to improve education standards in the district. Mr. Mensah entreated parents to encourage educating their girl-child and children with special needs.
According to him, this would positively affect the families, the district and Ghana as a whole.
“Another dimension is to educate the girl-child and children with special needs. If these two parties are educated enough, there is the likelihood that their families could be move forward socially, economically and of course, morally. I am sure the positive progression would affect the society, the district, region and finally our dear country Ghana,” he noted.
He also charged parents to prevent their wards from watching unnecessary television programmes and using mobile phones during school days.
He appealed to all and sundry, to tolerate each other to ensure a peaceful election, before, during and after the upcoming elections.
The Central Regional Coordinator for teacher professional development and learning, Mrs. Nora Mbia, said she is optimistic the reading festival would instil confidence in the children.
