Ghanaians could be eating dolphins as smoked fish, a nine-member investigative committee suspects.
Briefing the media about findings concerning the rising death rate of whales and dolphins along Ghana’s shores, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof P K Ofori Danso told Journalists that “targeted fishing” of the mammals is the biggest suspect.
“They are targeting the fishes for their meat and then they smoke their meat, so be careful about what you call fish that you buy because you could be eating smoked dolphin”, Prof Ofori Danso warned.
The Committee, contracted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to do the investigations said the targeted fishing is being encouraged by a growing market for dolphins in Ghana.
Dozens of dead whales have washed ashore Ghana’s beaches in the past few years.
Oil drilling activities were, initially, suspected to be the cause of the sea mammal deaths, but apart from the targeted fishing, which the Committee says is a major cause, the deaths have also been put down to plastic waste.
“One of our major problems is plastics”, Prof Ofori Danso, revealed, adding: “All the plastics that we are buying, when it rains, they are all washed into the sea”.
