Ghana yesterday joined the rest of the world to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD) which is celebrated on March 8 every year and beyond.
IWD is marked globally to raise awareness and support for gender parity.
Speaking on the theme, “Be Bold for Change”, for this year’s celebration, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba asked employers to treat women employees with dignity and respect at the workplace to forge a better working world for all women.
She thus advocated for an inclusive cultures, that will admit women into decision-making at all levels in the society, be ye at home or the office.
Her call comes almost days after the unfolding saga of the Mawarko assault that involved a Lebanese supervisor and a 25 year old Ghanaian worker at the Abelenkpe branch of the Fast Food company in Accra .
Madam Djaba intimated that women must step up and take bold action in their spheres of life, whether at home or the office.
She added: “Ghanaian women on this faithful day, should know that nobody will give you your freedom; you have to take it”.
Also commenting on the day, First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo urged women to come together, and fight for a common course that will bring dignity to womanhood.
She acknowledged the contributions of Ghanaian women to the socio-economic development of the country, and called on them to do more for the country, as it celebrates her 60th independence anniversary.
Also sharing her thought on the International Women’s Day yesterday on an Accra-based Eezy FM, General Manager of Today, Mrs. Vicky Wireko-Andoh advised women not to reduce themselves by exchanging their bodies for job roles or promotions.
She urged women to live by their dreams, and not to allow anything to distract their focus in life.
