Why Ghana Googles US Election with such Alacrity
Ghana – United States relations have generally been friendly since Ghana’s independence. Ghana was the first country to which United States Peace Corps volunteers were sent in 1961. Ghana and the United States are signatories to twenty agreements and treaties covering such matters as agricultural commodities, aviation, defense, economic and technical cooperation, education, extradition, postal matters, telecommunications, and treaty obligations. The refusal of the United States to join the International Cocoa Agreement, given Ghana’s heavy dependence on cocoa exports to earn hard currency, is the most serious bilateral issue between the two countries.
These, with many other issues and ties are concrete reasons why Ghanaians are very interested in the outcome of the US elections, since they believe that the US’ choice of a leader will definitely affect them [Ghanaians] in so many ways.
The 2016 US presidential election being held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, is the 58th quadrennial U. S. presidential election. The two leading aspirants in the race are Democratic Candidate, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump, who is the Republican Candidate. This year’s election appears to be the most controversial as well as the tightest for the world-powerful country, United States of America.
