President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi will serve another four-year term on the FIFA Council after he was re-elected at a Confederation of African Football (Caf) meeting on Thursday.
Kwesi Nyantakyi was challenged by Tanzania’s Leodegar Tenga, who is the President of the Tanzania Football Federation and Chairman of East African bloc Cecafa.
Nyantakyi polled 33 votes to beat Tenga, who polled 20 votes, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The election of Africa’s representatives onto the FIFA Council followed the historic election of Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar as the new President of Caf.
Nyantakyi will represent the Anglophone interest on the Council.
DR Congo’s Omar Constant Selemani polled 35 votes to beat Ivory Coast’s Augustin Sidy Diallo (19 votes) in the Francophone polls.
Tunisia’s Tarek Bouchamoui was elected to represent the Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish interest after Egyptian Abo Rida withdrew.
Guinea’s Almamy Kabele Camara and Lydia Nsekera of Burundi were elected in the open category.
