Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection on Monday hailed the leading role the Ghana News Agency (GNA) continue to play in the national communication system.
“When I was appointed as a Minister in 2013, the GNA was the first to break the news to me. The Gender Ministry’s achievement over the last four years is partially attributed to the wonderful support from the GNA.
“The Agency has been instrumental in disseminating information from the Gender Ministry as well as other ministries, departments and agencies for the nation’s socio-economic development,” Nana Oye Lithur stated during interaction with Management and Staff of the Agency in Accra.
She said government would continue to support the GNA to ensure that the purpose for which Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President established the Agency on March 5, 1957, was achieved.
The interactive session afforded Nana Oye Lithur the opportunity to express gratitude to the staff of the nation’s wire service for their support for the Gender Ministry and the government over the past four years.
She urged the GNA Management and Staff to promote the positive image of the Agency, and to also promote teamwork, commitment and perseverance among staff to help reposition the Agency on the media landscape in Ghana.
Alhaji Mohammed Nurudeen Issahaq, the Acting General Manager of GNA appealed to the government to revamp the agency.
He noted that GNA was critical of government’s comprehensive communication policy that sought to harness the information arm of the state to build a viable and united nation-state.
He said GNA would continue to strive to be the preferred source of news and information on Ghana, Africa and the World.
The Acting GNA General Manager maintained that the GNA played instrumental role in carrying government messages, policies, plans and programmes to the people, including those in the remotest areas of the country.
“GNA’s operations also give a voice to the vast majority of citizens living in rural areas, thereby promoting good governance and reducing the urban bias of news reportage.
“In effect, GNA highlights the problems, desires, difficulties and aspirations of the public. Thus, matters of great importance are promptly brought to the attention of the government for action,” he said.
Alhaji Nurudeen said since the inception of the Fourth Republic, GNA had played essential role in providing balance, uninhibited platform to all political parties and other democratic stakeholders to reach out to the electorate with their electoral messages as well as serving as medium for feedback from the hinterland.
He said the agency would continue to play crucial role in the deepening of Ghana’s democratic dispensation through the maintenance of healthy working relationship with the Electoral Commission, National Commission for Civic Education, Institute for Democratic Governance, Institute of Economic Affairs, Ghana Centre for Democratic Centre among others.
