Gambia’s Adama Barrow Congratulates President Akufo-Addo

The president-elect of Gambia, Adama Barrow, has congratulated the newly sworn in President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a statement that was posted on his Twitter handle, Mr. Barrow congratulated Nana Addo, and called on him to continue John Mahama’s work.

“On behalf of the nation of The Gambia – I congratulate the 5th President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo for his accomplishment. I am hopeful that the presidency of H. E Akufo-Addo is going to carry on the great work of President John D. Mahama.”

“I commend President John D. Mahama for his maturity and statesmanship, and I thank him for his efforts in improving relations between Ghana and the Gambia.”

On Saturday, January 7, 2017, Nana Akufo-Addo, with his vice, Dr. Mahamamudu Bawumia, were sworn in as the president and vice president of Ghana respectively.

Adama Barrow won Gambia’s presidential elections held in December 2016.  Yahya Jammeh initially accepted defeat, and called Barrow to concede.

Barely a week later, Mr. Jammeh backtracked and said he “totally rejects the results” of the election, and called for a new election.

Various individuals and institutions in the sub-region and the world, have called on him [Jammeh] to hand over power but he is yet to do so as the date for swearing in the new President, January 18 draws closer.
