Gambians are not too worried President-elect Adama Barrow will be sworn in outside the country, a journalist based in Banjul has told TV3.
Haddija Jawara of the Gambia Press Union says the constitution demands a swearing-in within The Gambia’s territory and administered by a legal officer of the country.
“So people are not worried because it is based on law,” Ms Jawara said on Midday Live on Wednesday, January 18.
She, however, observed that what the people of The Gambia are worried about is “how [Adama Barrow] is going to enter the country. That is the problem”.
The tiny West African nation seems to be in crisis after President Yahya Jammeh called for a recount of the December 1 votes.
He had earlier conceded defeat by calling Adama Barrow of the Coalition Party.
But two days before the inauguration of Mr Barrow, a 90-day state of emergency was declared by the outgoing president.
He is expected to stay in power till the expiration of the state of emergency.
Ms Jawara told TV3’s Martin Asiedu-Dartey that the Party held a press conference on Wednesday, insisting their leader will be sworn in as scheduled and escorted to the country by Ecowas forces.
Mr Barrow himself has maintained that his investiture will take place on Thursday.
