Fresh disturbances erupted yesterday at Agbogbloshie, Accra hours after calm was restored, following violent clashes between the Dagomba and the Konkomba ethnic groups last Tuesday.
Yesterday’s disturbances occurred after a meeting between the two ethnic groups at the Yam Market. Chairman of the community, Mr. Kwame Noah, addressed the meeting.
A scuffle occurred shortly after the meeting, and degenerated when armed security personnel deployed to the place attempted to disperse the crowd after Mr. Noah had addressed them.
The military in the process of dispersing the crowd who had gathered to listen to the chairman after the meeting arrested a man who was wielding a pocket knife, bringing to three, the total number of persons arrested on the day.
The manner in which some of the military men handled arrested person angered the crowd, who attempted to rush on the military checkpoint (barricade).
Prior to the disturbances, residents were going about their regular business under the supervision of a heavy police and military presence.
Chief Inspector, Kwesi Fori, the Commanding Officer of the Police at the scene, told journalists that calm has been restored after several checkpoints were mounted throughout the community.
Two people were arrested Tuesday dawn, April 11, 2017, for possessing locally manufactured guns before the scuffle between residents and the military.
Two people were killed after a bloody confrontation between the Dagomba and the Konkomba ethnic groups at Agbogbloshie last Tuesday in Accra.
Scores of people also sustained various degrees of injury during the confrontation which was characterised by gunshots and brandishing of machetes.
Later, temporary calm was restored to the area before Wednesday’s disturbances.
