A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yoofi Grant has described Transport Minister, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey as someone who can perform better when commenting on sports than on economics issues.
Yoofi speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Friday said, the Minister has performed poorly on his commentary on the economy hence should rather consider taking up a new career in sports commentary.
“He [Fifi Kwetey] is in the wrong place, he would probably be much better as a commentator for sports than for economics because he is so way off… that it’s a figment of his imagination that he is spewing out there to Ghanaian’s,” he said.
Yoofi Grant was reacting to a press conference by the NDC’s setting the record straight forum on the economy.
The group led by the Transport Minister claimed among other things that the NPP has no moral right to criticize the Mahama administration as according to them, the party has woeful records in every sector of the economy.
“Incompetence is when a government sets a budget deficit of 4% in 2008 and finishing the years by 15% deficit. Incompetence is when a government promises to build a gang of four roads but had no clue where the money was coming from; it is incompetence when you set up a rail way ministry and still fails to deliver one centimeter of railway and has the rail tracks sold for scrap,” he chronicled.
Reacting to this, Yoofi Grant maintained that the former deputy Finance Minister is still not cut to comment on economic issues accusing him of only specialising in rattling out untruth economic figures.
“It has just been proven to you [Fifi Kwetey] that some of the numbers you are churning out are false but you keep doing this all the time, it’s not helping the country, you can’t go out rattling out numbers and expecting people to believe it meanwhile they can’t pay electricity, medical bills etc…,” he said.
According to Yoofi, it is absolutely surprising that Fifi Kwetey would refer to the NPP and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as incompetent when ‘the NDC actually edifies Bawumia and make him prophetic’ by denying his predictions on the economy which later turn out to be true.
Fifi Kwetey, he said is rather an epitome of incompetence as under his watch as an Agriculture Minister, the sector performed woefully.
“I will tell you what incompetence is, incompetence is when you inherit an Agric sector growth of 7 plus and you bring it down to 2.8%, who was the Agric Minister, he [Fifi Kwetey] was the Agric Minister, that is what is called incompetence. When you inherit an NHIS that was functional and he’s brought it to its knees and people are dying because they cannot afford GHC1.00 for malaria drugs,” he said.
He claimed that Ghana would owe more than 400 million Ghana cedis by the next two years if NDC is retained in power.
Fifi Kwetey however insisted that the NDC has worked to make Ghana’s economy better and has recorded many infrastructural developments.
“Every nation is built on the back of strong foundation and we have laid good enough foundation that is why there is stability and that is why growth is going up…,” he said.
