Farmers and residents who ply the bridge linking Abobiri, Kwasi-Komfois and Akyeansah nearl Suhum in the Eastern Region have bemoaned the deplorable nature of their bridge.
Some residents and market women who spoke to Adomonline.com’s Gershon Mortey said they are forced by authorities of the area to pay tolls before using the bridge which they say was constructed by government for free.
Chief of Akyeansah, Nana Oklu Akuffo II says half of the bridge on the road has caved in, posing a threat to the lives of users of the road including school children, market women, and farmers.
He described the situation as a death trap, adding that hardly a week passes without a resident tumbling into the bridge.
The onset of the rains has worsened the problem because farmers are unable to work, Nana Oklu Akuffo II indicated.
On his part, Chief of Abobiri, Nana Boafo Asante III described the struggle pregnant women go through before getting to the nearest medical facility in neigbouring towns for proper care.
Some women, he said, had died because the deplorable bridgbe had prevented their getting to the hospital in time.
Nana Boafo Asante disclosed that, teachers posted to the community leave soon after because of the challenges, and this is having a negative effect on education.
The residents have therefore appealed to the powers that be to, as a matter of urgency, compel the contractor working on the bridge to move to site.
Meanwhile, Assembly member for the area, Stephen Appiah says he has petitioned the DCE over the deplorable bridge for years but no action has been taken by the Assembly.
