Western Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku has bemoaned that chieftaincy disputes continue to be sources of worry in the region, particularly chieftaincy disputes in the Sefwi Bekwai Traditional Area.
Against this backdrop, he appealed to the Regional House of Chiefs and the courts to expedite action on some of the chieftaincy issues before them so as to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
He noted that the operations of illegal mining have been on the increase in the region whose activities have caused considerable damage to the environment as well as polluting the water bodies in the region.
He mentioned that though there have been warnings, crackdowns and joint Police and Military operations to clamp down the activities of these illegal miners whose activities gradually degrade the environment, the menace still persists.
DCOP Duku made the statement in his maiden encounter with journalists in the region to officially introduce himself as the new regional commander and also to canvas for support in the fight against crime in the region and Ghana as a whole.
He gave assurance for a closer co-operation between his outfit and the media and pleaded with the media to accord him same good working relationship they had with the previous administration to enable the Command to ensure that the security of the region is sustained and improved during his tenure.
He noted that the mandate of the Service cannot be accomplished without the support of a vibrant media since the media serve as an interface between the police and the large audience.
”We share information and intelligence therefore I crave your indulgence and support in all endeavors to ensure that the region becomes one of the peaceful regions in the country.”
To this end, he urged the media o make constructive criticisms and be circumspect in their reportage.
He also appealed to the general public to give credible and important information on criminals to enable the Command act decisively to improve the relative peace being enjoyed in the region.
