Long-term election observers deployed by the European Union (EU) ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general election on Sunday left for the country’s ten regions.
The 24 observers of the EU Election Observer Mission (EOM) were deployed in pairs to each region while the Greater Accra (Capital Region) and Ashanti Region will each have two teams.
“We will be here till January ending if the election enters a second round, but will stay till around Christmas if there is just one round,” Deputy Chief Observer Mark Stevens told media on Sunday morning just before the deployment.
The team, according to Stevens, will follow campaigning by the political parties and meet with election officials and stakeholders.
He added that 32 short-term observers will arrive close to the election day.
“We will be assessing whether the elections have been run according to the electoral laws of Ghana and whether they meet the international standards,” Stevens added.
Ghanaian authorities have invited the EU teams to assess all aspects of the electoral process from the legal framework to voter registration to media access, said a press release issued here on Sunday. Enditem
