It has emerged that, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers and Planners (E&P), Ibrahim Mahama, yesterday was held by the Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) and interrogated for hours.
Although, media reports claimed that Mr. Mahama was picked up to answer questions over some dud cheques he issued to the Customs division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at the Tema Port to clear some heavy duty equipment he had imported, The Herald’s information is that, he was invited by telephone on Monday, and he reported himself to EOCO, yesterday with two of his aides.
Mr. Mahama, who is said to be cooperating with the state institution, was said to have come home at a certain point in time to fetch a document and returned to the offices of EOCO.
It is not clear, what the EOCO is seeking, but ahead of the invitation, the governing New Patriotic Party’s Member of parliament (MP) P for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, had asked the Akufo-Addo government to arrest Ibrahim Mahama, accusing him of being corrupt.
Mr. Agyapong threatened to commit suicide, if Mr. Mahama escapes jail term. “I’ll commit suicide if Ibrahim Mahama is not jailed”, he charged.
“I will take in poison and kill myself if Ibrahim Mahama is not jailed, he should watch and hear me well, I will take in poison and die if Ibrahim is not jailed,” he added.
Yesterday’s interrogation according to Citi news lasted close to eight hours and was based on what the Accra-based radio station reports are “new accusations of financial malfeasance, which is being investigated” by the EOCO.
The station reported that sources at EOCO, had said Mr. Mahama, the brother of former President John Mahama has been visiting the office on other charges, but this is untrue.
He is the second high profile person associated with the previous government being questioned by the intelligence unit after the former Cocoa board CEO, Dr. Steven Opuni.
Several other associates of the previous administration, are being grilled by EOCO.
These invitations are largely seen as harassment of the persons connected to the Mahama administration.
Ibrahim Mahama, was contracted under the erstwhile NDC government to execute various projects notable among them is the construction of a field to house the Ameri power plant- he saved the country a whopping US$16 million.
The Kufuor government, had done a similar civil engineering job for the TICO power generating plant for over US$22 million dollars.
Mr. Mahama, had always maintained that his hands were clean. “Go and tell him [Ken] that I can be more ruthless than he thinks he is but, I just respect myself, my family and Ghanaian people hence; I have restrained myself following him into the gutter in spite of his numerous unsubstantiated and wild allegations and most of the time, pure lies,” he replied in a statement.
He is said to have told his close aides that he would assist EOCO with its investigations into any subject matter in which he is mentioned.
